Find the gaps in your BPS entitlements before DAFM finds them for you
Every year, a percentage of BISS applications get flagged for over-declaration. Sometimes it is genuine โ a boundary has changed, or a new road took a strip off a field. Sometimes it is a discrepancy that has been sitting in the system for years, quietly costing you money or building up a penalty risk.
You can cross-check your own BPS payment history against your LPIS (Land Parcel Identification System) maps using free tools that DAFM already gives you. Add an AI assistant to help read the numbers, and you can do in 30 minutes what used to take a full morning with a calculator and a stack of printed maps.
What this is about
Your BPS (now BISS) entitlements are linked to specific land parcels on DAFM's LPIS system. Over time, parcel boundaries change โ satellite imagery updates, forestry encroachment, new infrastructure. If the eligible area on your LPIS map no longer matches what you declared, you have a problem. The fix is simple: check them side by side. Most farmers never do.
How it works
-
Log into agfood.ie. You need your MyGovID. Go to agfood.ie and navigate to your farm account. If you have not set this up, your Teagasc advisor or local IFA office can walk you through it.
-
Download your BPS/BISS payment history. Under your scheme payments section, you can view your payment history going back several years. Note the declared area for each year โ in hectares, down to two decimal places.
-
Open your LPIS maps. In agfood.ie, navigate to the mapping section. You can view each of your land parcels with the current eligible area that DAFM has on file. Screenshot or note the eligible area for each parcel.
-
Compare declared vs. eligible. This is where most farmers stop, because cross-referencing 15-20 parcels across 5 years of payments is tedious. Here is where AI helps.
-
Paste your data into an AI assistant. Copy your payment history numbers and your LPIS eligible areas into any free AI tool. Ask: "Compare these declared areas against these eligible areas. Flag any parcel where the declared area exceeds the eligible area, or where the difference is more than 0.1 hectares."
-
Review the flags. The AI will give you a list of discrepancies in seconds. A typical 40-hectare farm might have 2-3 parcels where the numbers do not match perfectly. Most are harmless rounding differences. Some are genuine gaps that need attention.
-
Act on real discrepancies. If the AI flags a parcel where you are claiming more than the LPIS shows as eligible, you have three options: update your declaration before the BISS deadline (15 May 2026), contact DAFM to query the LPIS boundary, or ask your Teagasc advisor to review it with you.
What it costs
- agfood.ie access: Free. You need a MyGovID (also free).
- AI assistant (free tier): Free. The data involved is small โ a table of parcel numbers and areas.
- Total cost: โฌ0 and roughly 30 minutes.
For context, an over-declaration penalty can range from a proportional reduction in payment to a full penalty of up to 100% of the entitlement value for that parcel, depending on the size of the discrepancy. On a farm receiving โฌ15,000-โฌ20,000 in BISS payments, even a 3% over-declaration on one parcel could cost โฌ450-โฌ600 in penalties. Thirty minutes of checking is cheap insurance.
What AI gets right โ and where you need a human
AI is excellent at comparing two columns of numbers and spotting mismatches. It does this instantly and without the errors that creep in when you are cross-referencing a printout at the kitchen table after a long day.
AI cannot tell you why a discrepancy exists. It might be a genuine boundary change, a mapping error, or a feature (a pond, a road, a scrub area) that DAFM has excluded from the eligible area. For that, you need to look at the LPIS map yourself or walk the field.
Never change your BISS declaration based solely on what an AI tells you. Use it to find the questions. Then get answers from agfood.ie, your Teagasc advisor, or DAFM directly.
Where to get help
- agfood.ie: agfood.ie โ your LPIS maps and payment history are here
- Your Teagasc advisor: They can sit down with you and review discrepancies. This is exactly the kind of thing local advisory offices deal with every spring.
- DAFM helpline: If you believe an LPIS boundary is wrong, DAFM has a process to request a review. Do this before the BISS deadline, not after.
- IFA local office: Can help with agfood.ie access and entitlement queries.
The bottom line
Thirty minutes and a free AI tool can flag discrepancies in your BPS history that might otherwise cost you hundreds in penalties โ or leave money you are entitled to sitting unclaimed.
Common questions
Q: Is my farm data safe if I paste it into an AI tool? Use only the parcel numbers and area figures โ no personal details, no herd numbers, no PPS numbers. Parcel areas are not sensitive information. If you prefer, you can anonymise the parcel IDs (call them Field 1, Field 2, etc.) and the AI will still spot the mismatches.
Q: How far back should I check? Three to five years is enough to catch any creeping discrepancies. If your farm boundaries have not changed in that time, a quick check of the most recent year against current LPIS eligible areas will do.
Q: What if the AI finds a big discrepancy? Do not panic. First, check the LPIS map yourself to see if a boundary change explains it. Then contact your Teagasc advisor or DAFM before making changes to your BISS application. A discrepancy on paper is not automatically a problem โ it is an opportunity to fix something before inspection season.
